It\u2019s a collective responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the commitment from Georgia\u2019s Marietta school district, which is now looking beyond the early elementary grades as it works to improve reading achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, much of the focus of the \u201cscience of reading\u201d movement has focused on foundational skills usually taught in the earliest grades. But older readers who haven\u2019t mastered those foundations are at risk of falling further behind as they attend classes that increasingly rely on complex texts to build their knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the Marietta district\u2019s training comes in. It\u2019s partnering with a PD provider to supply middle and high school educators to learn how to teach basic reading concepts in middle and high school classrooms in age-appropriate ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs educators a key phrase you\u2019ll hear is differentiation\u2014you want every kid to get what they need, and I think that\u2019s what this training provided,\u201d said Amber Morgan, a reading specialist in Marietta. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t only practicing.
